There seems to be a line drawn in the sand amongst Baseball minds when it comes to the 7/8 year old age group. Some believe Machine pitch is the best option, while others side with a Modified Kid/Coach Pitch setup.

  • Machine Pitch baseball is designed to give young players consistent pitches to hit with player safety in mind. However, kids aren't given the opportunity to pitch, and batters aren't given the valuable repetitions of reading a ball from a pitcher's hand. Since many pitchers of that age lack the control and consistency to throw strikes at a high rate, the teams use a pitching machine to offer pitches to the batter until contact is made. In essence, the machine is the substitute for players and coaches who attempt to throw strikes to the players.

  • Modified Kit Pitch baseball provides the players a chance to throw the first few pitches to the batter, requiring the Coach to pitch the remainder of the at bat only if the player-pitcher throws four called balls. This benefits players on both sides of the diamond as the fundamentals of pitching can be taught, enforced, and practiced; while at the same time providing valuable reps at hand-eye coordination for the batters.

KLMBGC offers Modified Kid Pitch teams for kids between the ages of 7 and 8, and participates in the PG County Boys and Girls Club (PGCBGC ) league, under the Babe Ruth Organization. We believe that the Modified Kid Pitch setup, while initially challenging, will result in a better prepared baseball/softball player.
